Walkable Neighborhoods – Historic Districts
[caption id="attachment_4549" align="alignright" width="247" caption="Click to view video"][/caption] There is more and more talk and media reporting about "walkable" neighborhoods and communities. Even within new, distant planned developments you'll find efforts, in some cases, to try and provide walkable proximity to community amenities beyond windswept neighborhood parks. There seems to be a growing appreciation for a lifestyle that allows for walking to shopping, restaurants, entertainment, church, community gathering centers such as festival and arts centers, schools and well, your neighbors. This is particularly nice for the kids to have a neighborhood of friends that are not a car ride away. (Can you imagine ...
12 Restoration Blunders | Fine Homebuilding
Ok, so this is really weak simply reposting an article from someone else. It's a great article though and too good not to share. In fact, in addition to giving it a read, I'd encourage you to print it out and share it with a friend. We have a packet of information we share with new neighbors to one of the historic districts and I think we should add a hard copy of this to that packet. Anyway, there are a couple "Blunders" that really resonate for me... well actually most of them do but two I'm compelled to add an ...
The Greatest Threat To Our Planet. Cul-de-sacs?
A little extremist... yes, perhaps. It's the lead-in for the following short 3-min. video. I would agree though with the premise. That suburban sprawl is unsustainable, counter productive to the development of "community" including personal interconnectedness and general quality-of-life values for a growing number of people... and families. Oh... and it's funny and very well done. "New Urbanism" If it's new to you has been an increasingly popular goal for community planners, developers and importantly, the general public when considering where they choose to make their home. Further, I would propose that while we're seeing any number of NEW New Urban developments created from ...
Great American Main Streets Award Winner 2011 | Beloit WI
We, Ana and I had the opportunity to attend this years national Main Streets conference held in Des Moines a couple weeks ago. While it was a great conference with much to talk about I'll mention just two. First... Downtown Beloit Wisconsin | Great American Main Streets Award Winner for 2011! There are literally thousands of participating community downtowns across the country and thirty six here in Wisconsin alone. Each year the National Trust For Historic Preservation's Main Street Program recognizes just five communities for this recognition. The National Trust and Main Street use this opportunity to recognize the exemplary work of ...
Big downtown Beloit improvement du jour?
The community of Beloit continues to invest in its downtown. It seems that for the few years we've been in town every few months there is something significant taking place in the ongoing revitalization of Beloit's downtown. Improved riverfront (taking up parking deck and adding a canoe/kayak launch & too many additional things to mention), an expanding farmer's market that is among the very best in state, additional live music venues (Suds), unveiling of historic downtown facades (Bagels & More), adaptive reuse of historic structures (Hendricks Arts Center in the old Post Office > Library... to name just one of several), ...
Repair or Replace Old Windows?
Don't know if it's getting old that I post about replacement windows but it has become epidemic. Serving on the "Landmarks Commission" in my commmunity we've seen a doubling of COA's (certificate of appropriateness) this last year over the year prior for taking out repairable windows for "replacement" windows. By the time a homeowner has made the decision to replace their windows, submitted their COA and come to the commission their minds are already set and they've resigned themselves that they're going to be spending all that money to replace their windows. After all, the window manufacturers, retailers and installers have all ...
Top 5 Wisconsin Energy Myths
Compiled by Jonathan Beers Madison Gas & Electric Myth 1: Leave the thermostat at one temperature. It costs as much or more to catch up if you turn the heat down when sleeping or gone. Myth 2: Keeping fluorescent lights or computers on is cheaper than turning them off. There's a big surge when you turn them on. Myth 3: Replacing windows reduces heating bills a lot, and is cost-effective. Myth 4: Caulking and weather stripping saves a lot of energy. Myth 5: Using an electric space heater saves money. This was part of a broader presentation at the recent Madison Area Builder's Association ...
This Old House: Beloit Among Best Old House Neighborhoods
Yes, that's right. We've been noticed. . This Old House in association with Preservation Directory has selected Beloit Wisconsin to be among the 2010 Best Old House Neighborhoods in the US. …what we looked for was simple: oft-overlooked neighborhoods populated by people who share an appreciation of finely crafted homes that have plenty of past and lots of future. ~ This Old House From the state of Wisconsin, Beloit was the one chosen. This is fantastic news and some measure of validation. There are many in and around Beloit’s Historic Districts that have stated that the revitalization of Beloit has been a bit of an ...

Always wanted to live in one of those beautiful historic homes?
Listings of Old Houses for sale in and around Beloit’s historic districts. Old house living is not for everyone.
