New Candidates:

Format: This will be a moderated event for the five candidates running for the three open seats in the April 7 election for the school board. We’ve solicited questions from the community at large and distilled these down to five. Each candidate will have time to respond. Following this there will also be time for question/answer.
  • How do you define the role of a school board member?
  • What are your qualifications for serving on the school board?
  • What, specifically, do you hope to accomplish during your time on the board?
  • What is your position on the recent changes made to school district administrator contracts?
  • Given that we are in a period of hard economic times, please list your top three areas to fund and top three areas to cut.
Feedback loop: Additionally, at the end of the evening attendees will be provided a brief form whereby you can provide your comments given the forum’s exchange. We’ll compile this and report this back to the candidates in order to provide as much cross communication as possible for you and the candidates.
Our fine neighbors at bushel & peck’s have been kind enough to let us gather there. So come on out, meet the candidates and participate.

Piss-n-Moan or Do Something – Thanks Beloit PD!

There’s been a bashed and abandoned car on Park Ave in front of the Park Ave. Apartments. I’d noticed it about a week ago but only yesterday got around to taking a pic and this morning phoned it in. Unrelated I then had to run an errand and happened to be driving by. I’ll be damned if there wasn’t a PD officer there already checking it out.

Granted, of the range of things our PD needs to deal with this is not on the urgent end of things. And it’s likely slow on a Sunday morning as well. All the same, it was more than I expected, it helps and it’s appreciated.

A few months ago there was someone who’d decided that within steps of a Park St. intersection was a good place to park their car and leave it with a for sale sign. The owner did not live there and our neighborhood streets are not for cottage industry used car sales. I called and the city took care of it.

I know there are larger and more urgent issues but I’d encourage folks to let the city, or the PD or whomever know whats up. What happens from there is another matter but the first step is caring enough to speak up. If in fact you care enough to help advocate you’re welcome to come on out and join us. Participate.

If you’re not sure who to contact for what, the city’s website has a lot of great information. Additionally we’ve tried to distill some of this down for you on our own NPA links page.

A win-win. Those of us living within Beloit’s historic district got a new Ace Hardware and more open space for the Riverside Park. Looking forward to more good things.

First looking into Riverside Park then looking out from Rotary Center.

Have you seen the the Downtown Beloit Association’s “News on the Street” publication? I’d missed it until just days ago. It’s very well done. Very interesting with great content! I was reading the Fall 2008 edition which is still available and what jumped out at me was:

Historic Preservation and Sustainable Development:  What does it mean for Main Street?

by Joe Lawniczak, design specialist for the Wisconsin Main Street Program.

It addresses

  • The relative value of new construction -vs- Existing structure rehab in terms of what in fact is “Green”.
  • What sustainable development is… and is not
  • How historic building are inherently green.
  • Preservation as Smart Growth
  • Simple ways to make your business, neighborhood (Hey! That’s us!) and community more “green”.
