While many renovation/restoration projects are generally do-able for the generally handy homeowner willing to learn and take their time with the project repairing specifically "weeping mortar" joints is not one of them IMO. It does require some specialized tools for grinding out the joint and while you may be able to rent such equipment unless you're experienced you can do a lot of permanent damage very quickly while you're trying to learn this technique. But that's not even fully the issue. The technique for getting the mortar to "weep" on a repair is a tricky one that requires particular materials. And then you get into matching an aged color and texture etc. etc. It's a very fussy type of project to take on.

As you might imagine the vast majority of masons are not going to be familiar with historic masonry techniques and restoration much less have an appreciation for restoration work. Look for one that is experienced in historic restoration type work. The first thing that will come to mind is that this sounds like specialized expertise which equates to premium pricing. Not always the case if you shop around. But check references and inquire about restoration experience.

Try not to be dollar foolish. The wrong mason can leave you with a very permanent sad feeling and can actually diminish the historic character, curb appeal and value of your home. Drive around any old neighborhood and you'll see sloppy, cost-prohibitive to reverse, Portland cement tuck pointing that will only get worse over time. Don't be that home owner.

There are restoration experienced masons all over the country. For those local to Beloit and the broader stateline area one contractor you may want to contact is Bob Davis of Triple A Masonry here in Beloit. 608-290-1655.
We cannot make recommendations. There may be others in the area likewise experienced. Please check references and decide for yourself. I can tell you Bob is a wealth of information and willing to share if you've a question. I understand he's currently working on an historic 1860's home restoration locally.

Hope this helps. I applaud your interest in maintaining an important defining characteristic of your fine old home.

David,
I expect very few if any realtors know what a Lustron is. Your best bet may be to Google the various associations and see if you can tap into a network.

We're not really taking individual entity promotional materials. What's in there is either specific to old-house, historic district subjects or a couple more comprehensive things like something from Visit Beloit that in turn might include individual items such as your organization.
